It is purposely created to make Nigeria a beneficiary and major player in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). It will bring the most advanced information technology to Nigerians, an effort that will not only develop the economy, but may close the digital divide opening up between different part of the country; and contribute to closing a similar divide between the developed and the emerging economies.
ICT has become the most potent economic and technological force in the world today, with the potential of harnessing the huge human potential of Africa, and Nigeria along with it, to provide not just a livelihood in the coming decades but the engine of growth for an emerging economy such as ours. In the last 10 to 25 years, information technology has continued to impact on all aspects of human existence from food production, to medicine, education, right up to the way governments store, share and use information. It is predicted that ICT will profoundly change humanity in the same way agriculture did when man abandoned the life of hunter-gatherer and settled to a civilized life as we know it today.
