COURSES:  STAGE II

  Programming Course: Object Oriented languages - C++, Java and others like Visual Basic and Visual Fox Pro.

System Administration, hardware and networking: MCSE, MSCD, A+, Network+.

Database: SQL, Data Management and Mining, PHP.

Web Applications: HTML, Javascript, VB Script.

COURSES

Information Technology training is the main focus of the institute but its scope is broad and covers all aspects of high-technology services in the sector ranging from computer repairs, programming to VSAT assembly and installation. LCI will start by offering non-degree programmes but it hopes to offer degree programmes too in the near future.

Courses will be offered in stages, as the institute build-up its capacity. Stage one courses will be available immediately, while stage two courses will be phased in gradually from the middle or third quarter of 2005. Stage three courses will be available much later.

Stage I: Foundation courses in computer appreciation, and internet usage for both public and executive customers. Also introductory, intermediate and advanced training in Microsoft products - Microsoft office suite users (MOUS) - word processing, spreadsheet, database, powerpoint and internet explorer. There is a professional Microsoft Certification for these. Desktop Publishing and visual design software training in industry standard packages like PageMaker and Corel Draw will also be available, subject to the strength of the demand.

Stage II: Higher level professional courses and training will be offered. Graduates of stage I courses and other post-secondary and tertiary institutions graduates can enroll in:

Stage III: At this point, advanced database courses like Oracle will be introduced along with advanced networking certification like CNA and CISCO
Also at this stage the African Virtual University Degree courses in Business, Humanities and IT will be integrated more closely to complement the existing curriculum.

Located in Nairobi, Kenya, the African Virtual University (AVU) is a pioneer educational and telecommunications network established to serve the countries of sub-saharan Africa. It was created in 1997 to address some of the challenges facing Higher Education in sub-saharan Africa, such as low enrolment rates and the lack of quality training for the workforce in preparation for participation in the Global Knowledge Economy. Its superior offerings or value proposition, includes a digital library and an online learning portal, available to all learning centers and their students. AVU offers certificate, Diploma and degree programmes to selected learning centers across the African Continents. LCI is one such centre in Nigeria. Courses are offered using the latest distance learning interactive technologies. AVU courses include:

IT Master Certificate: This course of six modules runs from March to November in three semesters. It teaches all required web development, multimedia and graphic design skills, Visual basic programming language and also incorporates an A+ PC repair module. The course is offered by the New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA. This course will be offered by LCI either at stage I or II. See http://cpe.njit.edu/AVU

Diploma and B. Sc Computer Science: The two year (four semester) diploma and four year (eight semester) degree programme each with its specific entry requirements, is offered by the AVU in conjunction with RMIT University of Melbourne, Australia. Certificate in Business Communication in English: This course of six modules runs from March to November in three semesters. The modules are A Survey of Issues and Communication Methods; Organisational Structure, Behaviour and Climate; Globalization and International Management; Entrepreneurship and Innovation; and Human Resources and Employee Motivation. The course is offered by Georgetown University, USA. This course that should interest all persons that desire managerial skills, not just language skills, will be offered by LCI at stage II. Certificate in Journalism: This course of five modules runs from March to November in three semesters. They are: Introduction to Journalism Skills; Community Journalism; Communication Research Methods; Public Opinion Polling; and the Editorial Process.
